Medication Management Q & A

What is medication management?

Many patients with mental health conditions benefit from prescription medications. Successful treatment involves finding the appropriate medication, determining the best dosage to control your symptoms, and monitoring your progress.

The experts at Bowman Medical Group will work closely with you on your journey towards recovery.  Keep in mind that treatment may also include psychotherapy or other treatment options as part of a personalized treatment plan.

Which mental health conditions benefit from medication?

Psychiatric medication affects neurotransmitters in your brain that regulate your mood, thoughts, and behavior. Some common conditions that medication can address include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Medication affects each patient a little differently. One medication might work well for one person, but not for another. Some people experience more side effects from certain medications, while others don’t experience any side effects at all.

Which medication is right for me?

When you see a mental health expert for a consultation at Bowman Medical Group, they perform a comprehensive evaluation. Additional tools may be needed to help determine if you could benefit from certain medications.

Your provider may order blood work, genetic testing, and may request information about your medical history from your other providers. Genetic testing may be ordered by your clinician. Genetic test results can provide information about how your body metabolizes certain medications.

Based on your individual needs, your provider may recommend one of the following medications:

Antidepressants

Antidepressants alleviate the negative emotions associated with depression. They may also help with anxiety, chronic pain, and insomnia.

Anti-anxiety medications

Anti-anxiety medicines help reduce worry and fear. They can help restore your ability to perform daily tasks and enjoy social situations, avert panic attacks, and improve sleep.

Antipsychotics

Antipsychotics control delusions or hallucinations that occur with some conditions, like Bipolar I Disorder. They’re usually used in combination with antidepressants and other medications.

Stimulant medications

Stimulants improve concentration and focus in patients with ADHD.

Mood stabilizers

Typically used for bipolar disorders, mood stabilizers such as Lithium or Lamictal prevent extreme mood swings.

Medication is very helpful, but it is not for everyone. Bowman Medical Group offers options for patients who haven’t found relief from depression or other conditions. Alternative treatments can include ketamine treatment with a prescription medication called Spravato™, which is a nasal spray, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
