ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric condition characterized by the inability to focus your attention, stop moving, and control your impulses. ADHD can make it difficult for you to perform multi-step tasks, stay organized, manage your time and commitments, and keep up with everyday obligations.

Adults and teens with ADHD may also experience difficulty in social situations and interpersonal relationships. The condition is often correlated with poor work or school performance, low self-esteem, and sometimes co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

What causes ADHD?

Researchers haven’t identified the exact causes of ADHD. Possible factors that may contribute to the condition include genetics, individual brain chemistry, and prenatal exposure to toxins.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

ADHD symptoms vary among individuals. In teens and adults, ADHD may cause rash decision-making, reckless or risky behavior, and emotional turmoil.

Inattentive ADHD symptoms include:

  • Difficulty focusing on tasks and activities
  • Inability to follow instructions and complete tasks
  • Difficulty organizing tasks
  • Avoiding activities that require continued mental effort
  • Losing important items
  • Forgetfulness

Hyperactive/impulsive symptoms include:

  • Fidgeting, tapping hands or feet, or squirming while seated
  • Feeling restless at inappropriate times

How is ADHD diagnosed?

Your experienced provider at Bowman Medical Group begins with a comprehensive interview. During this 60- to 90-minute interview, your provider takes a detailed history and asks you a series of questions to determine which tests to administer.

After your interview, you return to the clinic for a series of tests that assess your ability to maintain attention and stay on task. Your provider may also order lab work, genetic testing, or other tests to rule out any underlying conditions.

How is ADHD treated?

If you have a diagnosis of ADHD, your provider at Bowman Medical Group designs a personalized treatment plan to help you control your symptoms, develop strategies to help you focus, and address self-esteem issues or co-occurring conditions.

Depending on your individual needs, your plan may include:

  • Psychotherapy (individual, group, or family therapy)
  • ADHD medication
  • Antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications
